Jörg Simon

Prof. Dr. Jörg Simon is a Professor and Vice Dean in the Department of Biology at Technical University of Darmstadt. He leads research in microbial energy conversion and biotechnology, focusing on bacterial physiology and bioenergetics of anaerobic/microaerobic systems.

His research examines:

• Nitrous oxide respiration pathways in nitrogen cycles
• Sulfite reduction via cytochrome enzymes
• Biosynthesis of methylated menaquinone derivatives
• Electron transport chains in anaerobic respiration

He applies genetic engineering, omics techniques, and structural biology to study microbial metabolism and develop biotechnological solutions for greenhouse gas mitigation.

Dr. Simon actively advises PhD candidates (Lukas Geisenhof, Timon Laader, Julia Polat) and seeks additional BSc/MSc/PhD students for projects in microbial physiology. His laboratory includes postdoctoral researchers (Dr. Jakob Eller, Dr. Carolin Werner) and technical staff.
