Jyotsna Kapur is a Professor of Cinema and Media Studies with a cross-appointment in Sociology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where she also directs the Honors Program in Cinema. She holds a Ph.D. in Radio/TV/Film from Northwestern University (1998), an M.P.S. in Communication Arts from Cornell University (1992), and an M.Phil in History from Delhi University (1988).
Her research examines Marxist-feminist approaches to media arts, cultural politics of labor and identity under neoliberalism, documentary theory, Third Cinema, and children's media culture. She is currently investigating 19th-century conceptions of art, technology, and mass production in relation to Marx's concept of species-being.
Notable publications include Neoliberalism and Global Cinema: Capital, Culture, and Marxist Critique (co-edited, 2011) and The Politics of Time and Youth in Brand India: Bargaining with Capital (2013).
