Justus van Beusekom

Dr. Justus van Beusekom serves as a Visiting Scholar within the Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Management research group at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences. He is affiliated with the Department of Biology and specifically works at the Institute of Marine Ecosystem and Fisheries Sciences (IMF), where his office is located in Room 109 at Große Elbstraße 133 in Hamburg.

His research focuses on marine ecosystem dynamics with particular emphasis on anthropogenic impacts on marine environments. Dr. van Beusekom investigates how human activities, especially renewable energy infrastructure like offshore wind farms, affect marine ecosystems in the North Sea. His work integrates ecological modeling with field observations to assess changes in pelagic zones and benthic-pelagic coupling resulting from marine spatial planning initiatives.

Dr. van Beusekom's publication record demonstrates his specialization in the environmental impacts of offshore wind energy infrastructure. His 2017 article in Progress in Oceanography examined how wind farm foundations alter ecosystem dynamics in the stratified North Sea, representing interdisciplinary research at the intersection of marine ecology, renewable energy development, and environmental management.

As part of the Marine Ecosystem Dynamics research team led by André Eckhardt, Dr. van Beusekom contributes to collaborative research projects examining marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management approaches.
