Justine Howe

Justine Howe is an Associate Professor and Chair of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), where she has been affiliated since Fall 2013. She is also a core faculty member in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at CWRU.

• PhD in Religious Studies from Northwestern University
• MA in Anthropology and Sociology of Religion from the University of Chicago Divinity School

Her research focuses on contemporary Islam, Muslim communities in the United States, gender and sexuality in global Muslim contexts, and religion's intersection with technology. She has explored the role of "third spaces" in shaping Muslim American identity and is currently working on two book projects examining transnational Muslim revivalism and the history of the Muslim Students Association in the U.S.

She has received significant recognition for her work, including:

• National Research Fellow at IUPUI’s Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture

Professor Howe teaches courses such as Introducing Islam, Anthropology of Religion, Islam, Gender and Women, and Religion and Technology. She has edited the Routledge Handbook of Islam and Gender (2020) and authored Suburban Islam (Oxford University Press, 2018).
