About
Justin Vander Werff is a Professor of Engineering at Dordt University, where he teaches structural steel design, soil mechanics, structural analysis, and mechanics of materials. He is actively engaged in research at the intersection of structural engineering and Christian ethics, focusing on bridge design for seismic regions and accelerated construction methods. A licensed Professional Engineer in Iowa and Indiana, Vander Werff has received multiple awards including the Dordt University Excellence in Teaching Award (2020) and ASCE Iowa Section Outstanding Civil Engineer Award (2012).
- Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering, Iowa State University (2014)
- Master of Science in Civil Engineering, Iowa State University (2002)
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Dordt College (2000)
His research explores holistically Christian engineering practices, structural steel design, and seismic resilience. He advocates for the unity of beauty and functionality in engineering, drawing parallels between structural efficiency (e.g., suspension bridges) and divine design principles from Scripture. Articles highlight his work on normative design approaches and faith-integrated engineering scholarship.
Vander Werff serves as President of the Christian Engineering Society, having held multiple leadership roles in the organization. He also contributes to Dordt University through roles in the Academic Senate, Assessment and Program Review Committee, and as an ASCE faculty advisor. Awards such as the PCI Martin P. Korn Award (2016) reflect his professional impact.
Outside academia, Vander Werff mentors students through the Engineering Club and balances family life, enjoying garden work and attending children’s sporting events and performances. His work emphasizes stewardship of creation and loving neighbors through engineering practice.
