University of California, BerkeleyAbout
Justin V. Remais is a Professor and Chair of the Division of Environmental Health Sciences at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. His research focuses on the environmental determinants of infectious diseases, particularly how global environmental changes like climate variability, urbanization, and industrialization influence disease transmission. He leads studies on pathogens such as West Nile virus, schistosomiasis, and coccidioidomycosis, integrating statistical and computational approaches to model disease dynamics.
Education: PhD and MS in Environmental Health Sciences and Civil & Environmental Engineering, BA in Environmental Science, all from UC Berkeley.
Research interests include environmental health equity, climate change impacts on infectious diseases, and optimizing surveillance systems in low-resource settings. His work has secured over $13 million in funding, with projects in California, China, Ecuador, and Senegal. Recent studies examine climate-driven health risks in California, including flood-related chemical exposures and airborne fungal diseases.
He contributes to global health discourse through editorial roles at PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases and PLoS Global Public Health, and frequently engages with media on topics like Valley fever and climate change implications.
