Justin Scanlan

Associate Professor Justin Scanlan is an occupational therapist and academic specializing in mental health recovery, psychosocial disability, and workforce well-being. He holds a position at the Sydney School of Health Sciences (University of Sydney) within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. His clinical and research background includes roles in mental health practice and policy, including previous service as Professional Senior for Occupational Therapy in Sydney Local Health District.

Scanlan's education includes a PhD from the University of Sydney, a Master of Health Management from UNSW, and additional qualifications in education and mental health. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research interests focus on overcoming cognitive barriers in mental illness, occupational therapy practice innovations, recovery-oriented care, and workforce well-being. He leads projects on mental health program evaluation, curriculum redesign for mental health education, and sensory approaches in mental health care.

His recent work includes co-chairing the ANZOTMHA network and convening the 2025 Occupational Therapy Australia National Conference. Awards include the 2020 Sydney School of Health Sciences Teaching Award and 2017 Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

Scanlan collaborates with the Centre for Disability Research and Policy, and his teaching spans graduate courses in psychosocial occupational therapy and clinical reasoning. Current research students are investigating cognitive screening in emergency care, workplace well-being for creative practitioners, and parent-led interventions for neurodiverse children.
