Justin Buchler is an Associate Professor in Political Science at Case Western Reserve University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley (2004), an M.A. from UC Berkeley (1999), and a B.A. from Pomona College (1998). His research focuses on Congress, elections, political strategy, and democratic representation, with particular attention to polarization and electoral mechanisms.
His notable works include Incremental Polarization (Oxford, 2018), which examines legislative polarization through spatial models, and Hiring and Firing Public Officials (Oxford, 2011), critiquing electoral systems as tools for democratic accountability. His research also addresses media polarization, asymmetric political strategies, and the role of parties in legislative behavior.
Professor Buchler has received the Gordon Tullock Prize (2007) for his Public Choice article on electoral sub-optimality. He organizes the Open Discourse Lecture Series to foster cross-partisan dialogue and blogs at intenureveritas.blogspot.com. He advises senior capstone projects requiring rigorous hypothesis testing, often quantitative in nature.
His recent work includes conference presentations on media polarization (2016), partisan interpretations of electoral dynamics (2015), and the journalist’s ethical dilemmas in polarized environments (2015).
