Dr. June Madeley is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Information and Communication Studies Program at the University of New Brunswick (Saint John campus). She holds a PhD in Sociology from McMaster University, an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Dalhousie University, and a BA in Sociology from the University of Regina. Her research focuses on audience reception of transnational media, particularly manga and anime, and the sociocultural dynamics of World Science Fiction Conventions (Worldcon). She has conducted extensive research on manga readership across cultures, scanlation communities, and the global fan culture around science fiction conventions.
Teaching areas include media production, electronic research methods, and the history of communications. She has presented at international conferences such as Comic Arts Conference (San Diego) and Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference. Her work examines intersections of media, fandom, and cultural globalization.
Recent research includes cross-cultural studies comparing manga readers in Japan and North America, funded by the Midori Suzuki Media Literacy Foundation. She has published in journals like Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics and contributed chapters to edited volumes analyzing media transgression and cultural icons.
