About
Jun Liu is a Professor and Head of the Division of Geology within the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering at Hefei University of Technology, China. He serves as Supervisor of Doctorate and Master's Candidates, actively engaged in research across multiple geological and environmental disciplines.
His educational background includes:
- Doctoral Degree in Philosophy in Geology from The University of Hong Kong (2007-2012)
- Fulbright student at University of California, Davis (2011)
- Master's degree in Paleobiology and Stratigraphy from Peking University (2004-2007)
- Humboldt Visiting Scholar at University of Bonn, Germany (2017-2020)
Dr. Liu's primary research focuses on Triassic marine reptiles and the biotic response of Cenozoic biotas (including crocodilians, radiolarians, and grassland ecosystems) to climate change. His work spans paleontology, stratigraphy, quaternary geology, mineral prospecting, physical geography, environmental science, zoology, and ecology. He is currently expanding research into environmental history, biogeography and conservation biology of large reptiles.
His research encompasses several key areas:
- Evolution of Triassic marine ecosystems
- Human activities and environmental changes affecting Quaternary large vertebrate extinction
- GIS and remote sensing applications in paleontological research
- Cenozoic climate change and ecological responses in the northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
- Sedimentology and petroleum geology
Dr. Liu serves on the Editorial Board of Communications Biology (since 2024.11) and is a Council Member of both the Chinese Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and the Anhui Earthquake Society (since 2024.9).
He teaches courses including Paleontology, Introduction to Paleobiology and Geohistory, and Geological Understanding Internship. He leads the Geobiology research group and supervises students across multiple disciplines including Paleontology and Stratigraphy, Quaternary Geology, Mineral Prospecting and Exploration, Physical Geography, and Environmental Science.
