Julius Malin

Julius Malin, MSc, is a Doc.CH research fellow with the Swiss National Science Foundation, affiliated with the Multidisciplinary Environmental Studies in the Humanities (MESH) at the University of Cologne and the Department of Sociology at the University of Basel. His PhD research focuses on Sustainable Christian Agricultural Initiatives (SCAIs) in the rural USA, examining how religious beliefs drive sustainable practices amid rural decline ('Farmageddon').

Methodologically, he employs mixed methods: qualitative fieldwork at Hungry World Farm (Illinois) and Bethlehem Farm (West Virginia), coupled with a nationwide survey of SCAIs. His work bridges sociology, theology, and environmental science, addressing sustainability transitions in agrarian landscapes.

Teaching includes MA seminars on topics like 'War and Climate in the End of Times' (University of Cologne) and 'Economics of Religion' (University of Basel). Recent scholarly contributions include presentations at the Association for the Sociology of Religion (2023) and workshops on religious environmental engagement in Switzerland (2024).
