Juliet Sperling is an Assistant Professor of Art History and Kollar Endowed Chair in American Art at the University of Washington's College of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in American art from colonial times to the mid-20th century, media studies, and visual culture's role in shaping racial and ethnic identities. Her research emphasizes tactile encounters in art and material culture, particularly interactive paper constructions from 1776–1910. She holds a PhD in History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania (2018), and her work has been supported by ACLS, the Mellon Society, and the Smithsonian.
- Education: PhD (2018), MA (2013), and Cinema Studies Certificate (2014) from University of Pennsylvania; BA (2011) from UNC Chapel Hill.
Her current book project, Tactile Encounters in American Art, explores the interplay of vision and touch in U.S. print culture. She has also researched Jacob Lawrence's later works and Reconstruction-era Southern landscapes. Courses taught include undergraduate and graduate surveys of American art up to 1950.
Awards include ACLS and Wyeth Foundation grants, and she is a founding member of the Mellon Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography.
