About
Julienne Stroeve is Professor and Senior Canada 150 Research Chair in Climate Forcing of Sea Ice at the Centre for Earth Observation Science, University of Manitoba. She holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder and leads research on Arctic sea ice dynamics using satellite remote sensing, field observations, and climate modeling.
Her investigations focus on sea ice-atmosphere interactions, climate change impacts on polar regions, cryospheric processes, and implications for Arctic ecosystems and communities. Research themes include rain-on-snow events, sea ice thickness variability, polar bear habitat vulnerability, storm intensification, and freshwater cycles.
Recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate consistent focus on Arctic climate system changes, employing multi-sensor remote sensing and model-data integration approaches. Key patterns include declining sea ice cover, ecosystem vulnerabilities, ocean-atmosphere feedbacks, and improved modeling techniques.
Awards include the prestigious Canada 150 Research Chair in Climate Forcing of Sea Ice.
She advises doctoral candidates including Vaishali Chaudhary, Nicole Loeb, Yuhua Situ, and Ana Claudia Cardoso de Jesus. Research is supported by the Canada 150 Research Chair Program.
Leads the 'Climate Forcing of Arctic Sea Ice' research team studying extreme events, community impacts, and future projections. The interdisciplinary group collaborates internationally through field campaigns including MOSAiC expedition.
