Professor Julie Rrap is a Senior Lecturer and Co-Director of Sydney College of the Arts at the University of Sydney. She holds a PhD from Monash University and specializes in contemporary visual art, focusing on the human body, particularly the female body in Western art history. Her work spans photography, sculpture, performance, and video, challenging traditional representations through innovative media. Rrap has exhibited globally, including in the Sydney Biennales, Auckland Triennale, and the National Gallery of Victoria. Key roles include Higher Degree Research Coordinator and leadership in arts institutions like Artspace and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Research Interests: Body representation, feminist art, digital techniques, and the intersection of art with medical and technological interventions. Her pivotal works like Body Double (2007) and SOMOS (2024) explore embodiment and temporal identity.
Awards: NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (2021), National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize (2009), and multiple Australia Council grants. Her work is in major Australian collections.
Students: Supervises research on neo-sufi feminism and symbolic systems in art. Current advisees include Amber HAMMAD and Maya STOCKS.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery and ARC ONE Gallery. Her practice integrates interdisciplinary approaches, blending traditional and digital media to interrogate identity and history.
