Juliane Noth

Juliane Noth is Professor of East Asian Art History at the Art History Institute of Freie Universität Berlin, specializing in 20th-century Chinese art. Her research examines artistic practices during the Cultural Revolution, landscape painting traditions, and institutional histories of Chinese art academies. She directs the DFG project 'Art Academies in China: Global Histories and Institutional Practices' and previously led projects on Cultural Revolution art practices.

Her research interests include:

• Transformation of Chinese ink painting traditions
• Cross-cultural exchanges in socialist art education
• Gender representations in revolutionary propaganda
• Manuscript cultures in art historical transmission
• Landscape as political expression

Publications analyze artistic responses to political upheaval, with recent work examining Romanian-Chinese art exchanges and botanical representations in Chinese visual culture. Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on how artistic media mediated political and cultural transformations.
