Dr. Julia Strasheim is a Research Fellow and Associate at the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies, part of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Her work focuses on post-conflict governance, institutional reforms, and security sector restructuring in divided societies. She holds a PhD from Heidelberg University (2017) and has conducted fieldwork in Nepal, Kosovo, and Vietnam. Notable achievements include the 2017 Körber Foundation Dissertation Award and Leibniz Dissertation Award. Strasheim has led research projects such as 'Institutions for Sustainable Peace' (2012–2017) and contributed to policy analysis on Security Sector Reform (SSR). Her research combines quantitative and qualitative methods to address peacebuilding challenges in post-war contexts.
Education: PhD in Political Science (Heidelberg University), MSc in Peace and Conflict Research (Uppsala University), BA in Political Science (University of Hamburg and Växjö University).
Current research priorities include transitional governments, SSR efficacy, and comparative analysis of post-conflict institutional configurations. She has published in journals like Zeitschrift für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung and European Review of International Studies, and engages in public debates on Nepal's political evolution and EU-China competition in peacebuilding.
