Julia Sinclair

Professor Julia Sinclair is a Professor of Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Southampton and an Honorary Consultant in Addiction Psychiatry with NHS Wessex. Her work focuses on improving outcomes for patients with alcohol use disorders (AUD) and co-morbid conditions through research, teaching, and clinical practice. She holds academic affiliations with the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Wessex and the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre.

Education: MB BS (St George's Hospital Medical School, 1994), MSc Health Services Research (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, 2004), DPhil (Christ Church, Oxford, 2006). Her research investigates biological, psychological, and social mechanisms influencing AUD treatment outcomes, including interventions, health services optimization, and co-morbidity management.

Key research areas include alcohol's impact on healthcare systems, policy development, and innovative treatments for AUD. Her work spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, and implementation science. She leads projects like the Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams (PRACAT) and contributes to EU-funded initiatives like STRATIFY. Recent publications emphasize machine learning applications in psychiatry and alcohol's role in surgical outcomes.

Teaching contributions include coordinating the Addiction Psychiatry thread in Southampton's medical curriculum and co-chairing the British Association of Psychopharmacology's Substance Use Disorder training program. She supervises three PhD students researching clinical neurosciences.
