Julia Phillips is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago, where she has been teaching since 2018. A dual citizen of Germany and the United States, Phillips works primarily with ceramics and metal to create sculptures that interrogate the relationships between the human body, functional objects, and social systems.
- Research Focus: Her practice is informed by psychoanalytic theory, Black feminist thought, and postcolonial critiques, addressing themes of social belonging and institutional violence.
- Exhibitions: Phillips has exhibited internationally, including solo shows at Kunstverein Braunschweig and MoMA PS1, and group exhibitions at the Berlin Biennial, New Museum Triennial, and MASP São Paulo.
- Publications: Her writing has appeared in Mousse Magazine and publications by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Center for Intersectional Justice.
