- Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University (2003)
Professor Chadaga's research bridges Russian literature, visual art, architecture, film, material culture, and the history of science. Her work examines religious discourse and electric light in early Soviet period; mirrors as cultural windows; illusion and ideology in Soviet subterranean spaces; and intersections of art and crime in Chekhov and Nabokov. She investigates how material objects and visual phenomena shape cultural understanding in Russian contexts, with particular attention to the corporeal dimensions of everyday objects.
Her scholarly output consistently engages with material culture and visual studies, revealing how physical artifacts and sensory experiences inform Russian cultural narratives across historical periods. A dominant theme involves analyzing mundane objects to uncover deeper ideological structures within Russian society.
Scientific Awards:
- Shortlisted for the Historia Nova Prize for Best Book on Russian Intellectual and Cultural History (2014)
Professor Chadaga has secured external funding including a Project Pericles grant for community-engaged learning initiatives. Her 'Once We Arrived' project features student interviews with Twin Cities immigrants, while the 'Twin Cities Guide for Russian Speakers' represents ongoing student collaboration connecting language instruction with community needs. She actively mentors students through these applied projects that extend classroom learning into real-world contexts.
Her current research portfolio includes a book examining creativity and crime in Russian literature across two centuries, alongside a digital humanities project documenting Russian material culture, demonstrating her commitment to innovative methodologies in Slavic studies.
