About
Dr. Julia Berest is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Western University. She earned her PhD from the University of Western Ontario in 2008. Her research focuses on Russian and European intellectual history, particularly the reception of Western liberal thought in pre-revolutionary Russia, and the philosophical roots of Russian liberalism.
Her monograph The Emergence of Russian Liberalism: Alexander Kunitsyn in Context 1783-1840 (2011) examines the early Russian liberal tradition through the work of Alexander Kunitsyn. Current research includes a book manuscript analyzing the Russian reception of John Stuart Mill’s ideas and a project exploring nationalist elements within Russian liberalism.
Berest’s recent publications investigate Dostoevsky’s nationalism, Mill’s influence on Russian debates about modernity and happiness, and the interplay between scientific modernity and cultural tradition in Russian intellectual circles. Her work often bridges historiography and contemporary political discourse, particularly in light of post-2022 geopolitical shifts.
She has presented at major conferences such as the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies, Northwestern University, and the Canadian Association of Slavists. Her research has been published in leading journals like Slavonic and East European Review and Modern Intellectual History.
