About
Juha Partanen is a Professor at the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme within the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki. His research focuses on developmental neurogenetics, specifically investigating how intercellular communication and gene regulation generate neuronal diversity in the vertebrate midbrain.
His work addresses the molecular mechanisms controlling the development of dopaminergic and GABAergic neurons, which are critical for behavior regulation and implicated in psychiatric diseases. Key research themes include
- Intercellular signaling pathways
- Transcriptional regulation networks
- Neuronal progenitor dynamics
- Neurodevelopmental disorder modeling
Awarded the Medix Prize in 2008 and 2004, Partanen leads multiple funded projects including "Gene regulation in the developing brainstem" (Academy of Finland 2024-2028) and "Hypoxia promotes colorectal cancer" (Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation 2025-2026). He serves as doctoral thesis supervisor and examiner, and previously chaired the Finnish Society for Developmental Biology (2013-2015).
