Judith Axelby is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL at Sheffield Hallam University's Department of Education, Childhood and Inclusion. She holds an EdD candidature focusing on multilingual seminar group interactions and has extensive experience in international English language education. Her roles include teaching pre-sessional and in-sessional academic English programs, supervising Master's dissertations, and contributing to cross-disciplinary academic language development initiatives.
Before joining Sheffield Hallam in 2012, she taught English in international schools across Syria, Egypt, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Italy, including roles at Taipei European School and the Bilingual European School in Milan. She served as an IELTS examiner and trainer for Cambridge Young Learners exams until 2014.
Her research explores multilingualism's role in academic settings, particularly interactive listening dynamics in diverse seminar groups. She collaborates with the Academic Language and Literacies group to design discipline-specific interventions. Recent work includes presenting on 'Academic Literacy in a hostile environment' at BALEAP.
Judith has held external examiner roles for Leeds International Study Centre (2024–2028) and INTO Exeter Foundation English (2020–2024). Her teaching spans modules in Public Health, Business, Graphic Design, and Physiotherapy, integrating technology-assisted language learning and materials evaluation practices.
