Juan Wahren, PhD, is a sociologist affiliated with the National Scientific and Technological Research Council (CONICET) and a Lecturer in Rural Sociology and Latin American Social Movements at the University of Buenos Aires' Faculty of Social Sciences. His research focuses on territorial disputes, extractivism, and socio-environmental conflicts, particularly in Argentina's Vaca Muerta region. He directs the Rural and Latin American Social Movements Studies Group at the Gino Germani Research Institute and coordinates the Critical Studies of Rural Development Group at CLACSO.
Wahren holds a PhD, MS, and BA in Sociology from the University of Buenos Aires. His work examines rural movements, climate change activism, and the intersection of indigenous/peasant struggles with neo-extractivist policies. He advocates for agro-ecological alternatives and popular education initiatives stemming from social movements.
Key research themes include: territorial rights of Mapuche communities, resistance to fracking, food sovereignty, and decolonial critiques of development paradigms. His presentations at major conferences (LASA, CLACSO) emphasize Latin America's socio-ecological challenges and rural subjectivities.
