About
Dr. Juan Santos is an Assistant Professor in the Biological Sciences department at St. John's University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in ecology, evolution, and behavior from the University of Texas at Austin, and an M.S. in statistics. His research focuses on evolutionary and ecological modeling of biological diversity, particularly in ectotherms like amphibians and reptiles. He explores topics such as phenotypic adaptations, genomic diversity, and climate change impacts using bioinformatics tools.
Dr. Santos' lab investigates species distributions, complex phenotypes, and climate resilience in Neotropical ecosystems. His work includes developing computational algorithms for analyzing genomic and environmental data. He collaborates internationally and mentors students in bioinformatics, statistics, and fieldwork. Current projects emphasize conservation strategies for ectotherms under climate change and the genetic basis of anti-predator mechanisms in poison frogs.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on bioinformatics, evolution, and ecology. Dr. Santos prioritizes hands-on learning and integrates cutting-edge tools like R and Python into curricula. He supports students with disabilities and emphasizes ethical scientific practices.
Lab location: St. Albert's Hall, Room 334A. Contact: santosj@stjohns.edu or infraguttatus@gmail.com.
