Jua Iwasaki

Dr. Jua Iwasaki is a Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia's Medical School, affiliated with the UWA Centre for Child Health Research. Her research focuses on immunology and microbiology, particularly macrophage behavior in infectious diseases like Burkholderia pseudomallei and Coxiella burnetii, and the development of therapeutic inhibitors.

Her work spans host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and immune system phenotyping. Publications emphasize translational research, with recent studies on macrophage infectivity potentiators (2022-2024) revealing novel therapeutic targets against Gram-negative bacteria and Leishmania.

She leads two major grants: an NHMRC project (2023-2026) investigating penicillin failure mechanisms in strep throat, and a Department of Health WA initiative (2024-2025) developing a Group A Streptococcus vaccine. Her lab employs high-throughput screening and collaborates internationally on pathogen genomics.
