Joyce Rice is an Adjunct II faculty member in the Graduate Comics Program at California College of the Arts (CCA). She specializes in using comics for journalism, advocacy, and education. Her work explores intersections of history, technology, and societal issues. Rice co-founded Symbolia, a pioneering digital comics journalism magazine, and served as a Journalism Leadership Fellow at American University (2015–2016), investigating the role of game design in news media. She has spoken at SXSW, Game Developers Conference, and other venues.
Her research interests emphasize visual storytelling in news media and educational tools. Key themes include corporate accountability, public health crises, economic inequality, and historical analysis. Rice’s freelance projects span media engagement strategies for organizations like PBS Nova, Democracy Fund, and The Nib.
Her publications blend rigorous reporting with innovative graphic narratives. Recent works address energy policy, pandemic history, and cybersecurity. Professional engagements include design collaborations with institutions like WAMU 88.5 and Polygon.
