Jouko Raitaniemi is a Researcher in the Department of History at the European University Institute (EUI). His current thesis, supervised by Monika Baar, explores “Neutralism” for Western Europe? – European neutrals and the transnational discussions on detente and security policy within the Socialist International and its disarmament council, 1976–1987. His research focuses on political, international, and transnational history, with particular emphasis on Cold War dynamics, political identities, and the interplay between diplomacy and ideological movements. Raitaniemi’s work bridges traditional historiography with contemporary debates on security policy and international alliances.
