José R. Vilahomat

José R. Vilahomat is a Professor of Spanish and Latin American Literature at Hendrix College, specializing in 20th-century Spanish literature, Cuban literature, and aesthetic theory. Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, he initially pursued physics at the University of Havana before transitioning to philology, earning a specialization in Cuban literature. After defecting to the U.S., he completed his MA and PhD in Spanish at Florida International University, focusing on Borges and Lezama Lima. His research bridges literary analysis and cultural critique, emphasizing narrative techniques, postmodern aesthetics, and the interplay of satire in contemporary Latin American works.

He has taught courses on modernism, vanguardism, the Latin American literary boom, and seminars on Borges and Lezama. His scholarship spans over three decades, including analyses of Leonardo Padura’s crime fiction, dystopian themes in Mexican literature, and the revival of Menippean satire. His 2004 study on Sor María de Jesús Ágreda explores power dynamics between religious authority and political governance in 17th-century Spain.

Publications include Sátira y géneros menores (2021), Ficción de racionalidad (2004), and articles in Argus-a and Lemir. Beyond academia, he has worked as a high school teacher, translator, and photojournalist, contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to his scholarship.
