Josipa Roksa is a Professor of Sociology and Education at the University of Virginia (UVA) and currently serves as Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. Her work focuses on addressing educational inequalities in STEM, first-generation and low-income student success, and the role of socioeconomic status in higher education. Roksa holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University and a B.A. in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College.
As Associate Provost, she collaborates with academic and student affairs units to enhance undergraduate education equity, particularly for underrepresented groups. She leads the HHMI Driving Change and Inclusive Excellence 3 initiatives, aiming to transform STEM education and promote inclusive practices. Her research explores critical thinking development in college, parental influences on student success, and the intersection of race/gender in academic trajectories.
Roksa’s scholarship bridges sociology and education policy, emphasizing institutional and family support systems. She is affiliated with UVA’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning and EdPolicyWorks. Her recent projects include studies on financial aid impacts in STEM and advising dynamics in doctoral programs.
