About
Joshua C. Walsh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Manitoba. His research focuses on organic synthesis and π-conjugated materials, particularly exploring liquid-phase systems for solar energy and electronic applications. He leads the Walsh Research Group, which investigates soft, dynamic materials such as molecular liquids and liquid crystals.
Education: PhD in Chemistry (2016) from Memorial University under Prof. Graham J. Bodwell. Postdoctoral training (2021-2023) at the University of Zurich under Prof. Michal Juríček, supported by a Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship. Current lab facilities include an Anton Paar MCR 302e rheometer and automated column chromatography systems funded by University of Manitoba and NSERC grants.
Research Themes: Design of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, singlet fission materials, and functional molecular liquids. Key interests include photophysical properties, crystal engineering, and applications in solar technology.
Publications highlight contributions to pyrenacene systems, fluorophore design, and nanomaterials. Awards include the University of Zurich Postdoctoral Grant and Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship. Current team includes PhD/MSc students Samuel Awuku, Shashani Fernando, and undergraduate researchers Yulia Kuznetsov/Kolby Wiebe. Group collaborations involve Dr. David Herbert (University of Manitoba) and others.
Lab instrumentation includes advanced analytical tools for rheological studies and compound purification. Open positions currently unavailable.
