Joshua Singer

Joshua Singer is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Visual Communication Program at San Francisco State University's School of Design. He holds a B.A. from Hampshire College, an M.F.A. in Fine Art from Hunter College (CUNY), and an M.F.A. in Design from California College of the Arts. His research focuses on critical and speculative design, counter-design practices, and the intersections of graphic design with geography and semiotics.

He leads projects like Typographic Landscape Ecologies, documenting urban typographic artifacts, and Different Data, a collaborative design research initiative exploring urban cultural ecologies through experimental data practices. His work bridges transdisciplinary collaboration and critical theory, emphasizing design as a dialectical tool for challenging established narratives.

Publications include works on counter-design methodologies, urban semiotics, and open-source design research frameworks. He is principal of Atomtan Design, creating editorial and identity systems for arts organizations. His research emphasizes speculative models, critical pedagogy, and the role of design in reimagining urban realities.
