Joshua Newth

Joshua Newth is an Associate Professor of Art and Foundations Coordinator in the School of Art & Design at Southeast Missouri State University. Born in Toronto, Canada, he maintains an active studio practice and academic leadership role within the university's Cultural Arts Center.

His educational background includes:

• Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Michigan State University
• Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Wayne State University

Newth's research investigates mankind's relationship with nature through environmental art, focusing on the intimate effects of human activity on surroundings. His 2020 exhibition Acts of Unreason critically examined litter and detritus as manifestations of anthropogenic impact, exploring their multifaceted connections to daily life. This work exemplifies his broader practice of transforming overlooked environmental elements into conceptual art, exhibited nationally at institutions including Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, Masur Museum, Canton Museum of Art, and Louisiana State University.

As an educator, Newth has served as visiting artist at Murray State University and Cleveland State University. He has twice presented at Southeast Missouri State University's Crisp Museum Speaker Series, delivering lectures on Expressionism and the Feminist Spirit in Early 20th Century German Art and The Young British Artists: Transcending the Object, demonstrating his expertise in both historical and contemporary art movements.
