Dr. Joshua M. Smith is an Associate Professor of Humanities and Director of the American Merchant Marine Museum at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). He has been with the institution since 2003 and previously served as Department Head of Humanities until September 2015. His research focuses on maritime and naval history, including smuggling in the early American republic, fortifications, and the War of 1812.

He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor and oversees the American Merchant Marine Museum. Professional accolades include the 2007 John Lyman Award. He resides in Port Washington, NY, with his family.
