Joshua L. Cherniss is an Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Georgetown University's College. His research focuses on 20th-century political thought, particularly liberal ethics, philosophies of history, and the intersection of political theory with literature and moral psychology. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, a D.Phil. in Modern European History from the University of Oxford, and a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University.
His major works include Liberalism in Dark Times (2021), which examines liberal thought's ethical responses to anti-liberalism, and A Mind and Its Time (2013), a study of Isaiah Berlin's political thought.
