Joshua Kirshner

Joshua Kirshner is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of York's Department of Environment and Geography. His research focuses on low-carbon transitions, energy governance, urbanization, and environmental policy in regions like Mozambique, Colombia, and Brazil. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (City and Regional Planning), an MA from UCLA (Urban Planning), and a BA from Harvard University (Social Anthropology).

His key projects include the UKRI-funded CESET project on community energy in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Mozambique, and a DFID-funded study on Mozambique's electricity grid access. He co-leads initiatives like the Community Energy Lab in Maputo, aiming to enhance off-grid energy solutions through participatory approaches. His work bridges critical theory with participatory methods, emphasizing equity and sustainability.

Dr. Kirshner has published over 30 articles in journals such as Nature Energy and Climate Policy.
