About
Joshua J. Choi is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Courtesy Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science. He leads the Choi Laboratory for Optoelectronic Nanomaterials, focusing on semiconductor nanomaterials, perovskites, and quantum dots for optoelectronic applications. His research combines synthesis, characterization, and device fabrication to enhance material performance for low-cost, high-efficiency technologies.
Dr. Choi holds a B.E. from Cooper Union (2006), a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Cornell University (2012), and completed postdoctoral research at Columbia University (2012–2014). He has received the NASA Early Career Faculty Award (2015) and VSGC New Investigator Award (2015).
Research interests include wave function engineering, nanoheterostructure design, and solution-processed optoelectronics. His lab develops novel synthetic methods for perovskites and quantum dots, leveraging X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy, and electrical measurements to study structure-property relationships. Current projects aim to optimize perovskite solar cells and radiation detectors while advancing nanomanufacturing techniques.
Key achievements include pioneering work on cation/anion effects in perovskites and demonstrating vertical orientation control in 2D perovskite thin films. His publications span advanced materials synthesis, defect passivation, and device performance optimization.
