University of Minnesota Twin CitiesAbout
Joshua Feinberg is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He also serves as the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research for the University of Minnesota's five campuses and is part of the Institute for Rock Magnetism (IRM). His research integrates geophysical methods like rock magnetism and paleomagnetism with microscopy and field geology to study Earth's processes across global to nanometer scales. Collaborations span disciplines including geosciences, anthropology, and material sciences.
Feinberg’s work addresses topics such as geomagnetic field behavior, environmental change tracking via speleothems, groundwater quality monitoring in urban areas, and novel magnetic material characterization. He leads the Feinberg Research Group and actively promotes diversity in STEM through initiatives like the MagIC data consortium, which standardizes rock magnetic data. His research has advanced understanding of microbial roles in mineral cycling, volcanic processes, and anthropogenic impacts on groundwater.
Recent projects include real-time groundwater monitoring in the Twin Cities, paleoclimatic reconstructions using Bahamian speleothems, and developing tools like RockmagPy for magnetic data analysis. Feinberg’s contributions to education include fostering undergraduate research and addressing equity in geoscience communities.
