About
Dr. Josh Breithaupt is an Assistant Research Faculty member at the Coastal & Marine Laboratory, Florida State University. His research focuses on coastal ecosystems' biogeochemistry, sediment dynamics, and responses to global change. He investigates mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and oyster reefs, using tools like radiologic techniques, stable isotopes, and field surveys.
Education: Ph.D. (2017), University of South Florida; M.Sc. (2012), University of South Florida; B.A. (1999), Wheaton College.
Research interests include coastal carbon sequestration, fate of coastal soils under climate change, and storm impacts. He analyzes spatial-temporal variability in sediment accumulation and greenhouse gas fluxes across scales from centimeters to kilometers and seconds to millennia.
Notable contributions include refining mangrove carbon burial estimates and developing frameworks for soil organic carbon quantification. The Breithaupt Laboratory emphasizes fieldwork and lab analyses to address coastal ecosystem resilience.
