Joseph Tien

Joseph Tien is a Professor of Mathematics at Ohio State University, affiliated with the Translational Data Analytics Institute and the Division of Epidemiology. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (2007). His research focuses on mathematical biology, infectious disease dynamics, network science, and data-driven approaches for public health. He co-directs the Ecology, Epidemiology, and Population Health Thematic Program at the Infectious Diseases Institute.

He teaches courses such as Ordinary Differential Equations (Math 2255) and has previously instructed subjects like Dynamical Systems and Mathematical Modeling for Life Sciences. His work integrates epidemiological modeling, spatial networks, and behavioral data to address challenges in disease spread and public health policy.

Notable projects include modeling cholera dynamics, analyzing Ebola outbreaks, and leveraging social media data to study vaccination sentiment. He is actively involved in the Applied Math Seminar at OSU, organizing sessions on topics like disease spread and inequality modeling. His group collaborates across disciplines, including epidemiology, statistics, and computer science.
