Joseph Sramek is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Southern Illinois University within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from CUNY Graduate Center (2007) and a B.A. from SUNY-Binghamton (1998). His research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, and colonial rule in British India under the East India Company, with additional work on British ethnicity and nationalism in colonial expatriate communities.

Dr. Sramek is the author of Gender, Morality, and Race in Company India (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), which analyzes the role of gender and race in shaping colonial governance. His current research project, tentatively titled Being British in Company India: Nationalism and Imperialism in a Colonial Milieu, ca. 1750-1857, explores how British expatriates constructed their national identity in colonial India.
