Joseph Schear

Joseph Schear is an Associate Professor and Official Student and Tutor in Philosophy at Christ Church, University of Oxford. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. Before joining Oxford in 2008, he served as an Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University.

His research focuses on the intersection of philosophy of mind and post-Kantian European philosophy, particularly the phenomenological tradition. Key areas include self-consciousness, historicity of conceptual schemes, and the phenomenology of affective life. He is currently completing a book on intentionality, drawing on Husserl and early Heidegger, and exploring themes like the intelligibility of moods and agency in mind.

His publications span essays in journals like Philosophical Studies and Midwest Studies in Philosophy, as well as edited volumes such as Mind, Reason, and Being-in-the-World (Routledge, 2012). He co-convenes the Post-Kantian European Philosophy Seminar and edits the European Journal of Philosophy.

Current projects include studies on Sartre’s theory of others, the relationship between phenomenology and Kantianism, and philosophical approaches to psychopathology.
