Joseph Leventhal serves as Fowler McCormick Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University, Deputy Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Center, and Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
His educational background includes an MD from the State University of New York (1987) and a PhD from the University of Minnesota (1996).
Dr. Leventhal pioneers bionanotechnology applications in transplantation, with dual research thrusts:
- Nanofiber-targeted regulatory T cells (Tregs) to combat ischemia-reperfusion injury and induce immunologic tolerance
- Antigen-specific plasma cell depletion nanoparticles to eliminate donor-specific antibodies
He actively collaborates with the Center for Organ Repair and Regeneration (CRN), Comprehensive Transplant Center, and Stupp laboratory on translational projects.
