Dr. Joseph Layden is an Associate Professor and Programme Leader in the School of Sport, Business and Media at Marjon University. As Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, he oversees strategic academic programme support and directs the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES)-accredited Physiology Laboratories. He teaches in Sport and Exercise Science, Health and Wellbeing, and Sport Therapy, while supervising MRes, MSc, and PhD students. His research focuses on thermoregulation, exertional heat illness, and military health, with projects funded by UK and Dutch defense organizations.
Qualifications include a PhD in Applied Physiology (University of Strathclyde), MSc in Sport Science Physiology (Loughborough University), and a BA in Outdoor Education. Professional memberships include being a BASES Accredited Scientist and Fellow of Advance HE.
Research interests span military personnel health, thermal strain in extreme conditions, and nutritional interventions. Notable projects include assessing injury risk in Royal Marine recruits, evaluating nutritional provisions during arduous training, and validating clinical methods for Non-Freezing Cold Injury. He co-convenes the Resilience and Human Performance Knowledge Exchange Group and chairs the University Ethics Panel.
Publications highlight contributions to gastrointestinal health in heat stress, aging thermoregulation, and glutamine supplementation efficacy. He has presented at conferences like the International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics and the Wingate Congress of Exercise and Sport Sciences.
