About
Joseph Kirschvink is the Nico and Marilyn Van Wingen Professor of Geobiology at the California Institute of Technology, Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. He earned his B.S./M.S. in 1975 from Caltech, M.A. in 1978 from Princeton University, and Ph.D. in 1979.
Research Interests: Prof. Kirschvink pioneers hypotheses connecting biological evolution with Earth surface events, including:
- Biogenic magnetite in Martian meteorites as evidence for early life
- Magnetite-based animal magnetoreception mechanisms
- "Snowball Earth" climatic crises
- True polar wander effects on Cambrian biodiversity bursts
Publication Trends: Recent work spans paleomagnetism of Ediacaran formations, magnetic monopole analysis in extraterrestrial samples, and biogenic magnetite's role in cryobiology. His 2024-2025 studies focus on Ryugu asteroid samples and geomagnetic influences on biological systems.
Scientific Recognition:
- Richard P. Feynman Prize for Teaching Excellence
- American Geophysical Union's William Gilbert Award
Teaching Contributions: He instructs field geology courses and graduate-level paleomagnetism, including Ge 136 abc (Southwestern U.S. field trips) and Ge 124 a/b (Paleomagnetism & Magnetostratigraphy).
