Joseph D. Buxbaum, PhD, is a Professor of Psychiatry, Genetics and Genomic Sciences, and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He serves as Director of the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment and Vice Chair for Research and Mentoring in the Department of Psychiatry. Recognized globally, he ranks No. 177 in Genetics worldwide and No. 100 in the U.S., earning Research.com’s 2024 Genetics Leader Award.
Education: BSc from Touro College; MSc and PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science.
Research focuses on autism, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. His lab investigates molecular mechanisms using genetics, genomics, and animal models. He co-founded the Autism Sequencing Consortium (ASC), leading its groundbreaking work identifying autism-linked genes.
