Joseph Choma is Professor of Architecture and Director of the School of Architecture at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). He also leads the Foldable Structures & Materials Lab and founded the Design Topology Lab, an interdisciplinary practice exploring material innovation, unconventional construction methods, and geometric design. His research focuses on foldable structures, lightweight deployable shelters, and sustainable building techniques.
Education: PhD in Architecture from the University of Cambridge (as a Cambridge International Scholar), and graduate studies in Design and Computation at MIT.
Research interests include foldable composites, natural fiber textiles, ultra-thin concrete formwork, and the role of mathematics in architectural design. His work has been recognized by awards from the AIA, ACMA, and ACADIA, including the 2023 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence. He holds U.S. Patent 10,994,468 for hand-foldable fiberglass technology.
Awards and recognition include notable mentions in CompositesWorld Magazine and academic journals. Prior roles include Associate Professorships at Clemson University, MIT, and The Cooper Union, as well as a research residency at ETH Zurich’s NCCR Digital Fabrication.
