Joseph Anderton

Joseph Anderton serves as Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature at Birmingham City University, specializing in critical explorations of dehumanisation, animals and the environment, homelessness, and literary ethics within 20th-21st century literary works.

His research centers on the intersection of trauma studies and literary representation, exemplified by his monograph Beckett’s Creatures: Art of Failure after the Holocaust (Bloomsbury, 2016), which analyzes Samuel Beckett's treatment of 'creaturely life' in post-Holocaust contexts. He is currently developing Writing Homelessness in Contemporary British Literature, extending his investigation into marginalized human conditions through contemporary British fiction.

Dr Anderton actively supervises postgraduate research in modern literary theory, with emphasis on ethical frameworks in post-war literature and ecological narratives. His scholarly approach integrates philosophical ethics with close textual analysis of marginalized subject positions across literary genres.
