Josep Prat

Josep Prat is a Full Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), affiliated with the Signal Theory and Communications Department and the Optical Communications Group. He holds a M.S. in Telecommunications Engineering (1987) and a Ph.D. (1995) from UPC. His research focuses on broadband optical communications, emphasizing high bit-rate systems, access networks, and WDM transmission design. He led the FP7 European project SARDANA (2011-2015) and participated in multiple EU initiatives on optical networks.

Research interests include next-generation FTTH networks, impairment control in optical systems, and passive optical network architectures. He has authored over 100 international papers and co-edited seminal books like Fiber-to-the-Home Technologies and Next-Generation FTTH Passive Optical Networks.

He served as Subdirector of the ETSETB Telecom School and member of UPC's Government Council. He is currently an Associate Editor for IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (IEEE-PTL) and the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC).

Notable projects include leadership of SARDANA and contributions to Coconut, Accordance, and others. His work aligns with EU priorities in telecommunications infrastructure and optical networking advancements.

Labs/Teams: Member of the Optical Communications Group at UPC, collaborating with international institutions like University College London (guest scientist, 1998).
