About
Josep Maria Bas Lay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Girona (UdG). He has been actively involved in teaching and research since 1994 and is a key member of the Animal Biology Research Group (GR-PECAT), a consolidated research group recognized by AGAUR in 2017.
His research focuses on biological invasions, myrmecology, ornithology, plant-animal interactions, and the ecological impacts of forest fires and invasive species. He has led significant projects such as DESMARES I–III on sustainable fishing and shag conservation and has collaborated on studies evaluating control methods for the Asian wasp and Varroa mite in apiaries.
He has supervised six doctoral theses (two ongoing), four master’s theses, and 40 final-degree projects, and has participated in 27 research projects, resulting in over 30 SCI publications. His work bridges fundamental ecology with applied conservation and sustainable management.
