Josef Syka

Professor Josef Syka is a distinguished academic affiliated with Charles University's 1st Medical Faculty and the Institute of Experimental Medicine ASCR, where he served as Director of the Department of Auditory Neuroscience until 2001. He has held prominent leadership roles, including Chairman of the Czech Republic's Grant Agency (2000-2008) and Deputy Prime Minister for Research and Development (1993-2000).

Research Interests: His work focuses on auditory neuroscience and experimental medicine, bridging fundamental physiological research with clinical applications. The Department of Auditory Neuroscience under his leadership has been instrumental in advancing understanding of hearing mechanisms.

Scientific Awards:

• Received honorary doctorate from Russian Academy of Sciences (2009), which he voluntarily returned in 2022 as a protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
